THE SCIENTIFIC AND
TECHNICAL PROJECT

One of the objectives of the Antarctic Odyssey expedition is to support a scientific program serving the sciences of Life, Earth and the Environment for this remote and isolated region of the planet. In this context, several areas of research are proposed to the public and private institutional partners requested.

          1. WATCHING AND CONSIDERING TO UNDERSTAND

Global warming no longer needs to be demonstrated and is a consensus in the scientific world. During the 80 days of crossing, one of the proposals is to allow the various research institutes and laboratories to be able to exploit the results from recordings made in situ and in real time. Exploitation of the results will encourage the proposal of new collective measures aimed at slowing down the melting of the Antarctic ice cap and its consequences on the Southern Circumpolar Current.

           2. VALIDATING AN INNOVATIVE VEHICLE

Vehicles running on fossil fuels are no longer in line with measures aimed at limiting carbon emissions. Crossing the white continent aboard a vehicle propelled by the force of the wind will be an opportunity to prove that this original mode of travel is adapted to the Antarctic environment despite the extreme conditions. The goal is to be able to use sail propulsion on a large scale as a mode of travel in its own right. This line of research and development could enable human and material transport as well as resupply of the most isolated bases, particularly those located in the interior of the continent.

          3. SHOW ADAPTATION CAPACITIES IN EXTREME ISOLATION AND ENVIRONMENTAL SITUATIONS

  • Cold and wind

  • Isolation and confinement

  • Visual sensory deprivation
